Our Church History

The story of our church is one of sacrifice, community ministry, worldwide outreach and a determination and passion to witness for Christ.

It is also a story of ever-increasing growth and change.

Since we began, our church has experienced several expansions to meet the needs of a growing membership and community outreach.

Much of our early building efforts are owed to Reuben Boswell and his grandson Reuben Weddington, both who gave land to the church in its formative years. In fact, the church changed its name to honor Mr. Weddington who gave 800 acres to the congregation in 1874.

That same year, the church constructed a second, larger building to use for worship services, and later added a school and parsonage.

In the years from 1925 to 1972, a brick building replaced the wood-frame church from 1874, a community hut and Sunday School wing were added, and eventually a new parsonage and fellowship hall were built.

And as Weddington Church physically expanded, so did its membership, and consequently, its vision.

Focusing on the future, the church purchased the old Weddington School property across the street in 1979. For a while, the facility was used as a community center. But by 1990, under the leadership of Dr. Lenny Stadler, members voted to move worship and educational programs to the new property. The facility was renovated and expanded to include a temporary sanctuary, adult classrooms and a children's educational wing.

In 1996, members pledged $1.6 million to build our current sanctuary and additional classroom space.   In 2005, we built the Family Life Center to provide a gym/stage facility and a Teen Center.

Weddington Church has continued to experience phenomenal growth!  Membership has grown from 400 members in 1989 to over 3,100 in 2008!

Now closing in on 18 decades of history, we are still growing!  Our facilities are once again reaching past capacity. Again, as we tend to the needs of our church and the community beyond, we are envisioning the future of our ministries and outreach and asking, "Where can we grow from here?"

If you walk over to the old churchyard, you will notice a stone marker. On it are engraved the names of our charter members, those pioneer Christians who had a dream two centuries ago to build a church.

Is the dream still within us? Can we envision a future of new and improved ministries and activities created by new and expanded facilities?

If we can imagine the sacrifices of our earlier community of faith, we can boldly look toward the future and respond to God's new call for our congregation.
