History
Our church building was first established in 1907 as the Benton Heights United Methodist Church and has a God-woven story into our community spanning over several decades. In 1984, Weddington Church’s current Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Terry Moore, was in seminary at Pfeiffer University, when he began his first clergy appointment at Benton Heights United Methodist Church, where he served until graduation. Dr. Moore went on to continue his studies and receive his Doctorate in Ministry. He served at various churches throughout North Carolina before beginning his time with Weddington Methodist Church in 2008. During this time, Rev. Rocio Ávila-Ramírez was called to serve as the pastor of Benton Heights United Methodist Church in 2004 while she too was studying at Pfeiffer University. Rev. Ávila-Ramírez went on to finish her studies and serve in other ways as well. In the fall of 2014, under the leadership of Dr. Moore, Weddington Church was delegated the property of Benton Heights United Methodist Church.
Weddington Church began the task of repairing, updating, and reopening the church as a place of worship and gathering. In 2016, Rev. Ávila-Ramírez joined the staff of Weddington Church as Missions and Monroe Campus Pastor. Her bilingual gifts and heart for others would prove to be invaluable during this time of growth in Monroe. With the building repairs complete, and a focus on ministering to the surrounding community, Weddington opened an after school program for the local children. By building relationships and sharing the love of Jesus, this program expanded to include English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for the parents of the Homework Help children. Before long, adults began gathering on Wednesday nights to pray together and soon after, that grew into a weekly gathering for Sunday worship.
Today, Weddington Church’s Monroe Campus is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, vibrant community of people gathering together to worship God with opportunities for people of all ages to worship and serve our Savior, Jesus Christ.
